    per Margotwood’s tweet:

There is a World Book Night. April 23. It’s a UK thing. There used to be a US World Book Night (I gave out copies of The Handmaid’s Tale one year.) But they couldn’t sustain the expense and shut down in July of 2014.

There are a few other reading days but they are mostly for schools.

March 3 is Read Across America. That’s Theodore Geisel’s Birthday (Dr. Seuss). A national book is usually chosen but schools are free to choose any book they like. California usually chooses a different book. Often readers are invited in to schools to read a book to a class.

Then there is the California Young Reader’s Medal (many other states have something similar) where students are encouraged to read the three books chosen for their reading level; primary, intermediate, young adult and picture books for older readers. Only students are allowed to vote for the winners.

Late September/early October is Banned Book Week, sponsored by the American Library Association. It is to bring the public’s attention to censorship in this country; challenged and banned books, the reasons and the states where it has happened.

My own City participates in the “One Book”program. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_City_One_Book

Our local central library nominates several books and the public votes on which book will be the “one book” everyone reads. Nancy Pearl (the Superhero of Librarians) started it in Seattle in 1998.

NEA sponsors The Big Read (but I expect we will see that go away with Trump’s new budget.)
