Charlie Singing To Meow

I got a question about whether Charlie is generally more or less chatty
than wild coyotes, since he doesn’t have other coyotes to talk to.

I thought I’d share my answer with all of you,
with an audio example just for fun.

Charlie is SUPER chatty. Way more than the wild coyotes out back.
He talks to me (chatter), sings with me (howling),
sings with the dogs (they bark), to Mike’s truck (when he returns),
and he used to always sing when Eli meowed.
He won’t sing to the other cats’ meows, but he does sing when I say
‘meow’ the way I used to say it to Eli.
All together, he breaks into song multiple times a day.

The low voice you hear is Chloe – she gets loud at one point – well,
she seems loud because Charlie’s voice fades for a moment when
he jumps out the window to sing to the sunrise.
Then he returns and dominates the room once again.

Enjoy!

Oh my gosh, I’m super giddy that a question I asked inspired you to make an entire post on the subject. And with audio! Thank you! <3

Thank you for sharing this, Shreve. It’s a delightful way to start my day! I live in coyote territory and so am very familiar with their song. I mostly hear it at night. But I never hear it mixed with dogs who are friends. That is unique and divine.

I love this! My cat – sitting next to my computer – not so much.

My, you have quite the conversations going on.

Now I have a question. Is that chatter something coyotes normally do or is it a language Charlie invented specifically for you?

This is hilarious. This is also why you don’t live in an apartment building. Thanks for posting!

Can you say why comments are no longer accepted on your Instagram? I miss feeling connected, however deceiving that feeling might be!

M ~ That is coyote language. And because it’s so complex, people often think they’re hearing 20 coyotes chattering in the distance, when in reality it’s probably just 3.

    A ~ thank you for the Q!

G ~ I switched a setting so only people following my account can comment. I did not realize it was hindering good connection! I can switch it back, I was just testing things out in anticipation of the inevitable onslaught of nasty messages that will be coming my way when my new book comes out…. so I may switch it back on at some point. But even with it on, comments are still open for everyone to read and for anyone following my account to post.

  12. Ken Says:

Thank you so much for that! I’ve been following Charlie almost from the beginning. These days, I save my Charlie fixes for when I’ve had a rough day and need a pick me up. Today was very rough, and this was just what I needed!

So incredibly interesting, thanks for sharing! Also loved the 11-year hop-back “corn spaz” photo. That series still cracks me up.
