It’s been ages since I posted a written update on Charlie, and I’ve had a number of requests for it, so here we go. I’ll try to get in a more regular habit of written updates from here out. In short, Charlie is wonderful (but you knew that much).
He and Chloe are curled up together as I write this. Charlie was very hard on dog beds (as demonstrated here); if he wasn’t gutting them, he was dragging them outside, which really became a mess when it was muddy. So I got a human’s mattress from the thrift store which Charlie and Chloe share. There’s even room for me, too, if we squeeze.
Charlie tried to drag it outside a few times, but he could only make it budge a couple of inches. He did figure out that hoisting up a corner of the mattress in his mouth made the mattress easier to move, and then determined that he could best lift the corner of the mattress while standing on the mattress. Which, of course, made it impossible to then drag the mattress.
Luckily, he never progressed beyond this conundrum and the mattress has stayed safe and sound, and dry and intact, inside where it belongs. Charlie still sleeps inside every night, all through the night.

That must have been a sight him trying to move the mattress while standing on it…
Charlie and his magic flying mattress…. He already has a carpet, so why not?

I was JUST wondering/thinking about Charlie and Chloe last night! Thanks for the response!

Well, Charlie isn’t stupid. I’m sure he knows that sleeping in the house is a lot more comfortable pretty much year round. Besides, that’s where his pack sleeps. He’d rather sleep inside with you and Chloe than outside alone.
I think the mattress is a brilliant solution. Too big for him to drag or get through the door. Plus big enough for you to join them in a group cuddle.

Love the Charlie update, thank you. Hope you (and Mike) and the rest of the farmily are doing well too.

This is fun – to see in my mind’s eye Charlie and the Mattress.
Do you still need to be as attentive to the pack etiquette as when he was just growing up? Like, who goes out the door first? Does he come on open- range excursions with you unleashed? Do he and Cloe come with you on your horse sometimes? Most of the pix I’ve seen look like close to or inside the house.
Your beef sounds do good! Just like every thing else around the Farmily. Thank you very much for your generosity .

Oops. That’s supposed to be”so” not “do.”

T – brings up good questions. I also wonder how “tame” Charlie has become. Do the canines ever seriously fight? Is Charlie the pack leader? Have you ever had any episodes since his early days of Charlie scaring you with his behavior?
I guess what I really want to know is how does he behave any different from an average dog?

They are fascinating creatures. I have to laugh, I share this spot of earth with a number of coyotes and yet I have to come here to SEE one.
