Coyotes are now making an appearance on the East Coast. At least one has been spotted in my neighborhood near Charlottesville, VA. Several neighbors have commented about the danger they represent to pets and people on a local website. I have responded back to leave them alone, they don’t want to be around you. Also don’t leave small pets unattended outside. After following this website for 5 years or so, I have certainly seen the beauty and majesty of the animal and perhaps have forgotten that wild coyotes are predators. I hope no one goes on a killing spree here. I lived around them in California and never had a bad experience except often at 3 AM during the coyote chorus when they were hunting.

Thanks Richard for being the voice of reason.

    “killing spree”

Unsure if you’re saying the coyotes or your local community. Unfortunately there are those who are misinformed and think that killing is the only answer. There’s too much killing going on of everything. And the war on our nation’s wildlife is disturbing, if interested in what’s going on visit predator defense dot org.

So sweet! I almost scratched his little head on the computer monitor LOL I’m loving all the toy themed photos- he is so fun to see with them.

Richard – I’m glad you’re putting out information on your list serve. The mammal specialist for Montgomery county, Maryland gave a presentation on coyotes – he’s been watching for them for years and has only seen 3 or so – and he knows where/when to look. He said that they are really good at blending in with civilization. He also recommended making loud noise/banging pots so it’s not so hospitable to the coyote. Personally, I’d love to have them around but I know it’s not in their best interest given people’s attitude. We have plenty of parks and “green space” in the county so I hope they have all found cozy dens.

    Richard–

Also check out Project Coyote at http://www.projectcoyote.org

Their mission is to help educate local governments and communities about coyotes and learning to coexist. I think they have a staff representative that covers Virginia.

Charlie’s relatives deserve our respect and compassion. Thank you for standing up for them and helping to counter your neighbors uninformed fears. It’s not always a popular thing to do.
